JACKSON, Miss. – The week of October 21-25 is National School Bus Safety Week. This event, sponsored by the National Association of Pupil Transportation, is a worthy endeavor and deserves attention here in Mississippi. This year’s theme “Stand Back from the Yellow and Black” encourages critical feedback from students and promotes an awareness of the loading and unloading of school buses safely.
The safety of school children is critically important, and each local school district is encouraged to promote the welfare and safety of every child. In addition, drivers are urged to exercise caution around school buses.
Dr. Ben Burnett, superintendent of Lamar County Schools and chairman of the School Bus Safety Task Force, said a national report showed that more than 15 fatalities occur each year nationally around school buses.
“With thousands of children in Mississippi riding buses to and from school each day, we need all citizens of Mississippi to help us keep them safe by paying close attention around all of our school buses. Unfortunately, we have experienced that in Mississippi, having lost some of our children to accidents while loading a bus. Please join us in the effort to keep our students safe by raising awareness of this very important topic," he said.
