Response to Gov. Phil Bryant’s Announcement Regarding Scott County

February 14, 2014

JACKSON, Miss. – Dr. Carey Wright, state superintendent of education, issued the following statement today:

“We have been in conversations with the governor’s office regarding Scott County School District. It is an unusual situation because the district has a ‘B’ performance classification. I have directed staff to craft language that would allow the State Board of Education to have greater flexibility when similar situations occur in the future.

I want to reiterate the serious nature of the district’s violations of federal and state law and accreditation standards and to applaud the State Board of Education for making a decision in the best interest of the students of Scott County.

The Mississippi Department of Education stands ready to provide whatever assistance the interim superintendent and appointed board members need to address these severe infractions and move the district forward.”
