MDE Announces Summer Food Service Program

June 17, 2015

JACKSON, Miss. – The Mississippi Department of Education announced today the Summer Food Service Program, which provides nutritious meals without charge to children in need during the summer.

To obtain a listing of approved sites, hours of operation and meal types, call 1-866-3-HUNGRY or visit www.fns.usda.gov/summerfoodrocks.

The program is funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and is administered by the MDE’s Office of Child Nutrition.

The Summer Food Service Program is designed to ensure that children who had the opportunity to receive a nutritious meal at school during the regular year are able to do so during the summer months when school is not open.

Children who are part of a household that receives Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), or benefits under the Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations (FDPIR), or Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF) are automatically eligible to receive free meals.

Households of children who attend a residential camp must complete a meal application.  To be eligible to receive free meals at the residential camp, children must meet the income guidelines for reduced price meals.  The income guidelines for reduced price meals by family are listed here: http://bit.ly/1IPm7yN

Meals will be provided to all children without charge regardless of race, color, national origin, sex, age or disability, and there will be no discrimination in the course of the meals service.
