MDE Literacy Meeting for Parents in Oxford Postponed

February 24, 2015

JACKSON, Miss. – Due to developing hazardous weather conditions, the Mississippi Department of Education has postponed the regional literacy meeting for parents in Oxford. The meeting, originally scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 25, will now be Thursday, March 5 at the Oxford Conference Center at 6 p.m.

The meeting will provide an overview of the Literacy-Based Promotion Act and teach strategies that parents can use at home to help their children improve their reading.

The Literacy-Based Promotion Act, which emphasizes reading instruction in Kindergarten through 3rd grade, focuses on prevention and intervention to help children develop the reading skills required for 4th grade.  The legislation requires that 3rd grade students who do not meet reading standards by the end of the school year who do not qualify for a “Good Cause Exemption” will not be promoted to 4th grade.
